Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring content so AI engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews — retrieve it, trust it, and cite it in their generated answers. Where SEO targets a ranking position on a results page, GEO targets being part of the answer itself. The term was popularized by a 2023 Princeton-led research paper.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): Answer Engine Optimization is optimizing content to be the direct answer an AI or featured-snippet system returns, rather than a link the user clicks. In practice AEO and GEO overlap heavily; AEO emphasizes question-and-answer structure, concise extractable passages, and schema, while GEO is the broader term covering all generative engines.

Answer engine: An answer engine is a system that responds to a query with a synthesized answer instead of a list of links — for example ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews. Answer engines retrieve source pages, extract relevant passages, and generate a response that often cites a handful of those sources.

AI Overviews: AI Overviews are Google’s AI-generated answer summaries shown above traditional search results. They draw from Google’s normal search index, so blocking Googlebot removes you from both. Appearing in an AI Overview depends on standard ranking signals plus extractable, well-structured content that the model can quote with confidence.

Citation rate: Citation rate is the share of relevant AI answers that name or link your page as a source. Because answer engines are probabilistic, a single answer is noisy; a citation rate is measured by sampling many realistic queries and counting how often you appear. It is the core outcome metric of GEO.

Retrieval (RAG): Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is the pattern most answer engines use: before generating, the system retrieves relevant documents or passages and conditions its answer on them. GEO is largely about winning the retrieval step — being fetchable, chunkable, and clearly relevant — because content that is never retrieved can never be cited.

Grounding: Grounding is tying an AI’s generated answer to specific retrieved sources so claims are verifiable rather than hallucinated. Search-grounded models (for example Gemini with Google Search) attach citations to grounded statements. Well-structured, evidence-rich pages are easier to ground against, which makes them more likely to be cited.

AI crawler: An AI crawler is an automated bot that fetches web pages for an AI system — to build a search index (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot), to answer a user request (ChatGPT-User), or to collect training data (GPTBot, ClaudeBot). Each has its own robots.txt token, and answer-engine crawlers are separate from training crawlers.

robots.txt: robots.txt is a plain-text file at a site’s root that tells crawlers, per user-agent, which paths they may fetch (RFC 9309). Disallowing an answer-engine crawler removes you from that engine entirely. Training and answer-engine bots use different tokens, so you can block model training while staying citable in AI search.

Crawler access: Crawler access is whether an AI crawler can actually reach and read a page — a function of robots.txt rules, server-side bot blocking, and rendering. A common failure is being “allowed but empty”: robots.txt welcomes the bot, but the page is client-rendered, so the non-JavaScript crawler receives a blank shell.

Client-side rendering (CSR) / JS shell: Client-side rendering builds a page’s content in the browser with JavaScript, so the raw server HTML is a near-empty “shell.” Because the major AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot) do not execute JavaScript, CSR-only content is effectively invisible to them — one of the highest-impact and most common GEO failures.

Server-side rendering (SSR): Server-side rendering generates a page’s HTML on the server so content is present in the raw response, before any JavaScript runs. Along with static and pre-rendering, SSR ensures non-rendering AI crawlers can read your content. It is the standard fix for the JS-shell problem that blocks AI-search visibility.

Structured data: Structured data is machine-readable markup (usually schema.org vocabulary) that states a page’s entities, relationships, and facts explicitly — who, what, price, rating, Q&A — instead of leaving them implied in prose. It helps both search engines and AI parse a page reliably and is one of the clearest GEO signals.

JSON-LD: JSON-LD (JSON for Linking Data) is the recommended format for embedding structured data: a script block of JSON in the page head describing schema.org entities. It is decoupled from visible markup, easy to validate, and the format Google and most tools prefer. Invalid JSON-LD is silently ignored, so validity matters.

Schema.org: Schema.org is a shared vocabulary of types and properties (Organization, Article, Product, FAQPage, DefinedTerm…) maintained by Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, and Yandex. It is the standard way to mark up web content so machines understand it. Most structured data for SEO and GEO uses schema.org types, usually expressed as JSON-LD.

Entity clarity: Entity clarity is how unambiguously a page identifies its real-world entities — a company, person, or product — so AI can tell yours apart from similarly named ones. It comes from consistent naming, an Organization schema, and identifiers like @id and sameAs that link the entity to a knowledge graph.

sameAs: sameAs is a schema.org property whose values are authoritative URLs for the same entity — its Wikipedia or Wikidata page, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, or official profiles. It anchors your entity to known nodes in a knowledge graph, reducing ambiguity and strengthening the trust signals AI engines use when deciding whom to cite.

Knowledge graph: A knowledge graph is a network of entities and the relationships between them — the backbone of how search engines and AI represent facts about the world. Being a recognized, well-connected node (via consistent naming, sameAs links, and citations from authoritative sources) makes an entity easier for AI to trust and reference.

Chunking / passage retrieval: Chunking is splitting a page into smaller passages that a retrieval system can index and return independently. Answer engines often retrieve and cite a single passage rather than a whole page, so self-contained sections — each readable out of context, led by a direct answer — are more likely to be retrieved and quoted.

Inverted pyramid: The inverted pyramid is a writing structure that leads with the direct answer, then adds supporting detail and context. For GEO it makes each section self-contained and quotable: a 40–60 word answer up front gives an answer engine a clean passage to extract, with evidence and nuance available below for readers who continue.

FAQPage schema: FAQPage is a schema.org type that marks up question-and-answer pairs on a page. Google deprecated FAQ rich results for most sites in 2023, but the markup still helps machines parse Q&A structure and gives answer engines clean, extractable pairs — provided the schema text matches the visible on-page questions and answers.

Corroboration: Corroboration is the degree to which independent sources confirm a claim about you. Answer engines favor facts repeated across multiple credible sites, so brand mentions, citations, and consistent information beyond your own domain raise the odds of being cited. Research suggests web mentions correlate with AI-overview visibility more strongly than backlinks alone.

llms.txt: llms.txt is a proposed standard (llmstxt.org) for a markdown file at a site’s root that gives LLMs a curated, link-listed map of key pages. It is an emerging community proposal, not a ratified standard, and major AI crawlers have not confirmed they read it — useful low-cost insurance, not a ranking lever.

Model Context Protocol (MCP): The Model Context Protocol is an open standard from Anthropic that lets AI agents discover and call external tools and data sources through a uniform interface. As agents increasingly act on users’ behalf, “agent readiness” — being listed in MCP registries with clear tool metadata — becomes the agent-era counterpart to being citable in AI search.

Prompt universe: A prompt universe is the set of realistic questions a buyer might ask an AI engine about your category. GEO measurement samples this universe and checks how often you are cited across it, rather than testing a single query — because AI answers vary by phrasing, personalization, and run-to-run randomness.
